On Melting Cities

By Mike O’Connell

memory is monitored by confusions
of clocks misplaced frozen representatives
of used time still inching toward
undefined conclusions crammed into
places fused together like melting
cities at rush hour leaping over
one another silent examples of
a cacophony mad stampedes
honking horns jets screaming at
the skies no longer able to accommodate
them there are accumulations of
missed opportunities scolding
reservoirs of anger vented at
rotting windmills food for nightmarish
swarms of imaginery insects and
ravenous decades vaporous landscapes
with no borders or horizons hybrid
populations of friends remembered or
forcefully forgotten replacing
one another each hoping the dream clock
stops at happier times always wishing
for acceptable disorder and misremembered
reasons to laugh out loud
