By Mike O’Connell
we gravitate towards
things that are
just like us thus
setting limits
on the amount of empathy
available for everyday use
empathy has difficulty
forging through
the complex swamps
that represent
self preservation
defensive arguments
deployed like claymores
around the borders of
our dense personalities
to slow the escape of
empathetic urges into fear
tapping the emergency brake
on surfaces of the soul
while spiritual carburetors
regulate the rush of evolving
situations that require our
attention our time
putting the system into safe mode
until things become
tangible once again
until calm clarity abides
all dread is finally dead
and sleep settles in
to be continued
