when i see

By Mike O’Connell
when i see a white haired woman
on the street or in a store
walking labored but proud
i see my smiling mother
struggling just to be
independent until her
body denied her freedoms
we take for granted
slowing slowly
dimming the lights
before the night arrives
skirting the edges of death
slave to gravities previously
unknown understanding
that memories of younger
selves are now taunting muscles
that once answered vigorously
driven by growing things
nurturing her self assigned
task of beautifying the world
(Mike O’Connell 3/7/18)
