long drive

By Mike O’Connell
born in 1995
she rattles clunks
soon to be jettisoned parts
still hang on the shell of her
she has traveled everywhere
she was asked to go
she is resting now
weary from her long drive
hovering in an automotive
purgatory silently waiting
death or resurrection
disconnected as she is
memories swirl inside
residues of grief and laughter
doomed to be crushed
torn asunder recycled as a
toaster parts of other cars
spirit intact waiting to serve us
reincarnated as another
fine thing that can be
trusted cared for
and appreciated
with talking heads
resounding in speakers
shattered by obsolescence
searching for ways to
crawl back to the womb
of the earth complete
