By Mike O’Connell
i harbor a runner inside
trotting along tree lined lanes taming asphalt path ways
strider of streams
leaf cruncher stone kicker
huffing towards flexible goals
harrassed by scolding squirrels
introductory barksngrowels from
dogs daring me to put
fingers through their fences
(not realizing they’ve already
done their job)distance dissolves
time gives way to rushes
pumping blood as far
as it can go until every mile
is an everest every second
a fleeting thing that i
inagine is trying to catch
up with me and thirst
races with me to the cool
pools of run’s end rest
the edges of sleep
and running tomorrow’s roads
