Leah On The Off Beat

By Miranda Boyer

When I finished SIMON VS THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA, I thought there was no way this author could write anything better. Then I read THE UPSIDE OF UNREQUITED and I swooned all over again. Two wins in a row meant I pre-ordered LEAH ON THE OFF BEAT as soon as it went for sale. There was never a doubt in my mind this book would hold up to Albertalli’s other books.

My favorite thing about Albertalli’s books, is her characters are flawed. They are far from perfect. I work with teenagers every single day, and she nails their personalities so well. Teenagers are impulsive, emotional, and they think adults will never understand.

Leah was one of my favorite characters in the Simonverse, so for her to get her own book was a pretty special thing. As a writer myself, I’m always looking at books and okay, I can say it… picking them apart. I didn’t like this, or I would have changed that. But When there’s a good book, there’s often nothing I would change. This has been the case with each of the Albertalli books I’ve read.

Becuase this is so new, I don’t want to give away anything about it. But I’ll say this, Albertalli has kept her inclusive writing style, she tackles tough subjects for teenagers including racism, poverty, and loyalty to friends. She does so with grace and beauty and sass.
