before darkness

By Mike O’Connell
in twilight
in open fields
warm wind whispering
you may hear echoes
of dinosaurs barking
lowing in tall grasses
drifting through epochs
searching for futures with food
abandoned by activated time
loathe to let go of
histories calcified
bones left as proof
of their dominance
their abundance nurtured
the soil of era after era
making afterthoughts of
humanity as it plunges
into the earth and robots
dig their bones
